Why is it called Country Bumpkin? Started in 1986 as a country gift shop by a stay-at-home Mom, Country Bumpkin was a business for sale in a few short months. Ready to leave her nursing job in Labor and Delivery, Kris and her husband Bob thought County Bumpkin was a great opportunity to turn their weekend antique buying and selling of country antiques and primitives into a full time venture. Creating with whatever was around had always been part of her life and her mother had instilled in her children a love to build and make things. As customers made requests for decorative objects, the supplies to make them such as paint, florals, stencils etc., and teaching how to use them seemed a necessary addition to the antique furniture. In the beginning years, locally made items were a mainstay of the business. Being tied to the shop made hunting for antique treasures difficult and by 1992 when the shop moved to the Courtyard of The Common, the majority of the business was in arts and crafts supplies and the antiques were needed for shop display and no longer for sale. There has been little "country" about Country Bumpkin for many years, however changing the name of a successful business isn't probably very wise so....20 years later we are still the same name but a very different business than when it started. One thing is the same..... a country bumpkin is a free spirit, relaxed and happy with itself---we hope customers are relaxed and happy and feeling free to create, whether it be with paint, beads, wire, wood, words, food, clay, pencils, wax, flowers, shells, crystals, glass, metals, fabric, fiber, etc. Creating feels good!!
What is Country Bumpkin all about now? As a source of supplies for creative people in the Lowcountry of South Carolina, Country Bumpkin is best known throughout the state as a wonderful source for jewelry making supplies. In fact, in 2003, we expanded into a 2nd building to accommodate the growing walls of beads, crystals, pearls and hundreds of sterling findings, hundreds of plated beads and clasps and thousands of strands of glass and stone. We have regular customers traveling hours from Atlanta, Charlotte, Greenville & Savannah to spend the weekend in Charleston because of the selection and prices at Country Bumpkin.
